Acidity

In acidity, there is a movement of gastric juices from the stomach into the lower oesophagus (food pipe). This condition mainly arises when acidic contents in stomach (hydro chloric acid) move upward into the oesophagus and making it dysfunctional.

In other words, acidity can also be defined as a condition in which there is an excess secretion of acid within the stomach. It is also commonly known as hyper acidity or acid dyspepsia.

Causes of Acidity

Following are the major acidity causes:

- Due to some problems in the functioning of the digestive system
- Sometimes excessive intake of alcohol also leads to acidity
- Acidity also arises either by keeping stomach empty for long time or skipping breakfast
- Eating foods rich in fats like chocolates also causes acidity
- Pregnancy, ageing or obesity can also cause acidity
- Eating junk foods, oily and spicy foods also leads to burning sensation in stomach and chest area and causes acidity
Symptoms of Acidity

Following are the major acidity symptoms:

- Restlessness with continuous cramps in the stomach
- Other symptoms of acidity are nausea and vomiting
- Sometimes bellyache is also felt
- Sour belches and passing off wind
- Respiratory problems and coughing

Do's and Don't for Acidity

Following are some of the simple tips to prevent acidity:

- Eat fruits and vegetables rich in fibres to help proper digestion
- Avoid spicy foods rich in oils and fats. These foods are difficult to digest and releases more acidity
- Avoid sour foods, onions, red meats and strong drinks such as tea and coffee
- Also avoid excessive smoking and alcohol
- Avoid eating acidic foods like pickles, curds, tamarinds, vinegar, etc
- Do not eat fried, fatty, junk foods and excessive chocolates
- Eat carbohydrate rich food like rice. They are easy to digest with no acid formation
- Take your dinner 2-3 hours before sleeping time as it keeps you healthy
- Eat fruits like cucumber, watermelon, papaya, and banana. They are helpful in eliminating acidity
- Take equal portions of ginger and coriander to get relief from acidity
- Drink 1-2 glasses of water early morning to keep yourself healthy and free from acidity
- Squeeze the juice of a whole orange and mix it with roasted cumin seeds. Add some rock salt as per your taste. This will give you an immediate relief from acidity. This is an effective home remedy for acidity.
- Taking 2 tablespoonfuls of Isabgol in milk after every meal is also very beneficial in eliminating acidity
- You can also drink coconut oil to get relief from acidity

Herbal Remedies for Acidity

Following are some of the effective herbal remedies for acidity:

- Take 1 tablespoon of amla with 1 tablespoon of haritaki. It is an effective herbal remedy for acidity
- Keep haritaki in mouth after your regular meal to get relief from acidity
- You can also take jaggery (gur) on hourly basis to get relief from acidity
- 2 teaspoonful of powder of amla taken twice a day is also helpful in treating acidity
- Take half lemons and with Rock salt in room temperature water that will give you instant relieve
